Using coastal areas as an economic and environmental resource 

The Solent – Southern England

 
  1. Dibden Bay – Area of mudflats and grassland that attracts wild birds and recognised as area of national importance by the RSPB. It also has a number of SSSI (Sites of Special Scientific Interest). A plan to build a container port was rejected in 2004

  2. Container facility – Part of a deep water port and covers an area of 200 acres. It is next to the rail freight terminal

  3. Exxon Mobile oil refinery – The largest refinery in the UK, covering an area of 3000 acres. The terminal handles over 2000 ship movements a year. The plant takes oil from around the world and turns it into fuels. The total workforce is 3000.

  4. Fawley chemical manufacturing plant – The plant produces over one million tonnes of chemical products a year. These are used in paints, adhesives and rubber for car tyres. 80% of the products are exported via the deepwater terminal

  5. The city of Southampton – Resident population of 250,000. It is the largest city in the south of England

  6. Roll on/Roll off facility – Nearly 750,000 vehicles a year are delivered from Asia, North America and Africa. There is also a vehicle and distribution compound that stores 6000 cars.

  7. The River Hamble – Contains several large marinas and a number of boatyards which are used by local and international yachtspeople, both for recreational and competitive sailing.

  8. Thorness Bay Holiday VillageHoliday Park overlooking the sea with a range of land and water-based facilities for family holiday

  9. Keyhaven Nature Reserve – The nature reserve extends to over 2000 acres of salt marsh and mudflats. The area supports nationally and internationally important numbers of migrating birds and is important for its range of plant and animal life
